Sound Explorer Kit

A hands-on sound exploration kit for children and families

The Sound Explorer Kit brings together a carefully selected collection of instruments and supporting digital resources to invite children to listen, explore, create and notice sound through play.

Designed to complement the Magical Sounds world, the kit gives children the opportunity to explore different sounds, tones, textures and vibrations using real instruments made from natural materials.

There is no right way to take part. Children can listen, experiment, make their own sounds, invent sound stories or simply discover which sounds capture their interest.

Every child experiences sound differently

One child may be fascinated by a sound that another hardly notices. A sound one child enjoys may feel unfamiliar or less comfortable to someone else.

The Sound Explorer Kit creates opportunities for children to explore these differences at their own pace, following their own curiosity rather than trying to produce a particular sound or musical result.

It is about exploration rather than performance.

What's included

Each Sound Explorer Kit contains a reusable collection of instruments and resources:

• 1 × Metal Tibetan Singing Bowl
• 1 × Wooden Mallet
• 1 × Wooden Maraca Shaker
• 1 × Wooden Egg Shaker
• 1 × Seed Shaker
• 1 × Set of Metal Tingsha Cymbals
• 1 × Yellow muslin “Happy Cloth” for setting out and exploring the instruments
• 1 × Magical Sounds Tote Bag
• Storage tin and muslin bags for keeping the instruments together

The instruments have been selected to offer a variety of ways to explore sound, rhythm, tone, texture and vibration.

Digital resources included

Your Sound Explorer Kit also includes access to supporting digital resources:

• An online video demonstration introducing listening-led ways to explore the instruments
• Two downloadable sound meditations for shared listening or quieter moments

These resources are there to offer ideas and inspiration rather than a set of instructions that must be followed.

Access details for the digital resources will be provided following purchase.

Explore together or independently

Children might use the kit to:

• Explore the different sounds made by each instrument
• Notice louder, quieter, longer or shorter sounds
• Experiment with rhythm and vibration
• Create their own sound stories and soundscapes
• Explore sound alongside storytelling and imaginative play
• Listen and make sounds together with a parent, caregiver or practitioner
• Discover which sounds they enjoy, notice or want to explore further

Activities can be as simple or as imaginative as the child chooses.

Use it with Magical Sounds with Echo Ta Ta & Friends

The Sound Explorer Kit can be enjoyed on its own or alongside Magical Sounds with Echo Ta Ta & Friends.

The instruments aren't intended to reproduce the individual character sounds in the story. Instead, they give children another way to take the ideas in the book and continue exploring sound for themselves.

They might listen to a character sound and invent a response, create a completely new sound character, accompany a story with their instruments or make their own soundscape.

Who is the Sound Explorer Kit for?

The kit has been created primarily for:

• Children and families
• Parents, caregivers and guardians
• Early Years practitioners and educators
• Home-learning and child-centred environments

No musical experience is needed.

The activities can be adapted according to a child's age, interests, preferences and experience of sound.

Designed to be explored again and again

The Sound Explorer Kit has been created as a durable, reusable sound resource rather than a disposable toy.

The instruments can become part of storytelling, creative play and listening activities and can be returned to in different ways as children's interests develop.

The £85 price reflects the collection of physical instruments and accessories, their reusable nature, and the accompanying digital resources included with the kit.
